Where to Wing Foil Around Las Terrenas?

Playa portillo F one

Playa Portillo: The Ideal Spot for Beginners

👉 The Portillo spot is ideal for learning wing foiling safely and improving your maneuvers. It is one of the only spots on the north coast of the Dominican Republic that offers a flat water surface and minimal reef.

Wind Directions: The spot works best with winds from the East/Southeast to Northwest. The ideal conditions are with winds from the East and Northeast.

Spot Description: The spot benefits from East/Southeast winds. Thanks to this orientation, the coral reef provides a flat water surface.

Spot Crowds: Depending on the time of year, the spot can be very busy with kite surfing schools. Check with the instructors to identify the areas designated for lessons and those more suited for free practice.

For advanced riders, it is possible to go further out, behind the coral reef, for more tranquility. You will find some swell there depending on the weather conditions.

Dangers at the Spot:

  • The few reef heads in the middle of the flat spot. Take the time to spot them.

  • The large number of kite surfers on certain days.

Expect a 10-minute drive (by taxi, quad, or moto concho) from Las Terrenas.

Playa Punta Popi: The Ideal Playground to Perfect Your Free Fly

👉 One of the most beautiful spots in the Dominican Republic for free fly in wing when the swells come in. Just a stone's throw from Las Terrenas.

Wind Directions: The spot is suitable for winds from East to Northwest. When the wind is more East/Southeast, it is softened by the palm trees and doesn’t come in as well. It is slightly off, so stay alert.

Spot Description: The spot is located in the cove directly to the right of Punta Popi. The bottom is sandy, and there are few coral heads. However, to the East and West of the spot, there is coral reef.

Crowds: The spot is generally not very crowded because the launch for kite surfing is challenging.

Skill Level Required by Season:

Between December and April, there can be swells ranging from 50 cm to 2 m in the cove, with a significant shore break. This makes launching and landing technical. During this period, the spot is reserved for intermediate to advanced riders (especially on days with swell). Prerequisites: being able to fly in a spot with swell and perform jibes.

During the summer season (from June to August), the spot is mostly flat and suitable for beginners.

Dangers at the Spot:

  • The reef surrounding the cove. Be cautious on days with swell, as the reefs are not very visible.

  • The shore break along the beach. It’s best to launch from the tip of Punta Popi where the shore break is weakest.

Getting There: You can walk if you live in the Popi area; otherwise, you can take a car, quad, or moto concho.

          Playa Coson, the Wave Spot

👉 Spot reservado para riders avanzados.

Wind Directions: From East-Northeast to Northwest. When the wind is from the East and Southeast, it doesn’t come in well. In these cases, prefer the spots at Portillo and Popi.

Playa Coson is a beach known for wave surfing. It is also possible to wing foil here. It’s a long sandy beach with few coral heads.

However, launching can be challenging as you have to get past the shore break.
